The Theatre Union of the Russian Federation was established as a public association of theatre workers in 1876 when a group of artists, painters, and writers initiated the foundation of the Society for Mutual Assistance of Russian Artists.

Its goal was ‘to provide aid to Russian artists facing a shortage of money, diseases and challenges, help them overcome hardships and live to see better days, enable them to invest their savings reliably, profitably and without risks,.. help them save up for a rainy day,.. and ensure a financially secure life for Russian artists after their long-term service to the arts’. Another goal of the society was ‘to provide broader opportunities to Russian artists to make their works known to the public and enhance their talents’.

The founders of the society included prominent people of Russian culture, such as Ivan Turgenev, Aleksey Pleshcheyev, Dmitry Grigorovich, Nikolay Potekhin, Andrey Krayevsky, and Vasily Vereshchagin.

Today, the Theatre Union of the Russian Federation comprises around 30,000 members and 81 local organisations in Russia’s republics, territories, and regions. The main goals of the Theatre Union are all-round support for the advancement of theatre arts, practical aid to Russian theatres and drama schools, comprehensive development of Russian and international theatrical ties, as well as promoting the protection of creative theatre workers’ social, legal and professional interests and adequate conditions for the Theatre Union members’ creative work and life.
