Scientific and technical intelligence is a key area of intelligence (alongside political and illegal intelligence) aimed at strengthening the country’s potential to guarantee Russia’s independence in developing and deploying state-of-the-art technologies, including both military and civilian ones.
The Scientific and Technical Intelligence Directorate is believed to be established on 26 October 1925 when Felix Dzerzhinsky, who chaired the USSR Supreme Council of National Economy, submitted a proposal to the Foreign Department of the Joint State Political Directorate to create a scientific and technical intelligence unit.
The Scientific and Technical Intelligence Directorate played a major role in a number of important events, such as the commissioning of the world’s first nuclear power plant, the launch of the world’s first artificial satellite into the Earth’s orbit, the construction of warships, and the development of new generation supersonic aircraft.
