The official foundation date of the Russian Armed Forces sports club is 29 April 1923. The first sports festival was held on that day, which was a football match between two teams consisting of athletes who were the Red Army servicemen.

The Red Army needed its own sports centre to train athletes and be an inspiring example for Army sports clubs, military districts and fleets. The Experimental and Demonstrative Military Sports Field of Vseobuch (OPPV) was created under the Central Administration of Military Training of Workers based on the Society of Skiing Enthusiasts, which had been founded before the October Revolution of 1917, and located at the Sokolniki Park in Moscow. This was the first central sports organisation of the Red Army. The OPPV was a basis for developing military-related sports such as track and field, weightlifting, football, basketball, gymnastics, boxing, shooting, skiing, and field hockey.

In 1928, the OPPV became part of the Central House of the Red Army as a department of physical training and sports. In 1958, the Central Sports Club of the Ministry of Defence was established by order of this Ministry. In 1960, the Club was given its common and currently well-known name – the Central Sports Club of the Army (CSKA). Today, athletes from 126 Russian cities are affiliated with CSKA. The Club develops 72 sports.
